Recognizing the Warning Signs of Alcoholism
Alcoholism is a devastating and often deadly disease. Luckily it is possible to recognize the warning signs of alcoholism and treat the disease before it causes irreversible harm. There are many different types of alcoholics from all social classes and walks of life. Many of them began drinking at a young age, such as in their early teens. While some alcoholics come from dysfunctional families and alcoholic parents, not all of them fit this description. Understanding alcoholism warning signs is important if you think you or a loved one may be at risk.
Johns Hopkins University Hospital has an official quiz that can help you determine whether or not you are an alcoholic. This quiz touches on every aspect of your life. For example, has alcohol caused you to miss time from work? Affected the quality of your sleep? Had a negative effect on your relationships? These are just a few questions to ask yourself. Have you tried to stop drinking, only to find yourself picking the bottle up again? When this happens, you may have a justification or defense for your behavior. These are all signs of an alcohol problem.
Signs of alcohol abuse can be mental, emotional and physical. A hangover is a common occurrence after a night of heavy drinking, and in many cases binge drinkers who get hangovers become very ill. The symptoms of a hangover from too much alcohol include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, trembling, anxiety and more. Not every alcoholic gets a hangover. While common in binge drinkers, some alcoholics drink all day every day and never feel hungover. If you or a loved one are hiding their drinking this is also one of the symptoms of alcoholism.
Understanding alcoholic behavior, recognizing the signs of an alcoholic and taking action can help save your life or that of a loved one. If you see warning signs of alcoholism in yourself, go straight to your doctor and tell them about it. They can talk to you about different kinds of treatment available for alcoholism, both inpatient and outpatient. If you notice alcoholic symptoms in a loved one, wait until they are sober and in a receptive mood to gently voice your concern and ask them to seek help. While you cannot make the decision to get help for them, you can lend your support by offering to accompany them to AA meetings or help them find and enter a good inpatient clinic if necessary.
