What to do About Teenage Alcoholism

Teenage alcoholism is defined as the disease of alcoholism in a child between the ages of 13 and 18. It is a more common disease for this age group than many people realize. One reason teens start drinking is peer pressure. These days it is harder for teens in school to fit in and they may try to do so by consuming alcohol at parties or other gatherings. This may make them feel more confident, or make them feel as though they look cool to their peers. The first time a person tries alcohol, they usually don't like the taste.

So, you can bet that the motivation behind a teen's compulsion to drink is not the taste of the beverage but something much deeper than that. Sometimes teens with alcoholic parents start drinking because they are genetically predisposed to do so, and no parental figure is stopping them. Sometimes it is a cry for help, some teens who drink want to get caught so an authority figure can take over and get them the right kind of treatment.

If you are a parent, the best thing you can do is lead by example. If you happen to be an alcoholic, go to rehab, attend AA meetings, get help. And if you're not, study up on the signs and symptoms. If your child is secretive, gets sick unexpectedly, behaves differently, starts to misbehave for no reason or displays other new behaviors it may be cause for concern. At home, keep any alcohol locked up securely and when your child is at a friend's home try to make sure their parents keep alcohol out of reach as well.

Also, talk to your child. Educating kids and teens about the dangers of alcohol may help prevent teenage alcoholism. Many teens don't realize that excessive drinking can kill them. They aren't aware of the risk of death by alcohol poisoning, or the possibility of liver damage. The risks of drinking and driving should also be part of the discussion. Being clear with children about why drinking is bad for them is a great way to help prevent the problem of teens and alcohol abuse in the future. If you have a teen that you think may have an alcohol problem, a visit to the doctor for testing and treatment is a must. There are special treatment centers designed especially for alcoholic teens you may want to consider.
