The Search for an Alcoholism Cure
Although there are many different kinds of treatments for alcohol, there is no known alcoholism cure. An alcoholic can be in recovery, just as a cancer patient can be in remission. However researchers are working hard to find a cure for alcoholism. At the least, they are coming up with various alcoholism treatments and modes of alcoholism recovery that may work for you or someone you know with an alcohol problem. The first step to alcohol recovery is admitting that the substance is a problem.
How can you tell if drinking is a problem for you? It's quite simple. If you have missed work or been fired for drinking, gotten into fights, gotten into trouble or woke up with a horrible hangover more than once you could be an alcoholic and should seek some kind of alcohol recovery program. It is wise to seek counsel from your doctor before choosing which program is right for you. He or she may want to run tests to determine your physical health. And, there are now medications that may be helpful.
For example, topiramate is a drug recently studied by the University of Virginia to help heavy drinkers. According to the study, this prescription drug can reduce the cravings of heavy alcohol users and may even help delay or prevent cirrhosis of the liver. It can be started before you stop drinking, so if you are planning to taper off to no alcohol ask your doctor if this medication is right for you. There is another medication on the market called Antabuse, which causes highly unpleasant sickness if alcohol is consumed, thus deterring the alcoholic from drinking.
Since everyone is different, no single alcoholism cure is going to help everyone. While medication might be ideal for some, inpatient treatment and counseling may be right for another. This is why it is important to talk to your doctor and recruit their help when looking for a treatment. The sad fact is that many alcoholics never go for treatment, and suffer from the disease until the day they die – often from something alcohol related. Quitting alcohol is something worth doing – you can prevent deadly diseases like cirrhosis of the liver and liver cancer. And, you can live a life free from the dangers and negative effects of addiction.
