What Happens at an Alcoholic Intervention?

An alcoholic intervention is just what it sounds like – one or more persons intervene in the life of an alcoholic by confronting them about their drinking problem. However there are certain established standards for conducting healthy and safe interventions. For example, the worst time to confront an alcoholic is while they are drunk. Waiting until they are sober, or at the least hungover, is the best way of confronting an alcoholic.

The alcoholism intervention usually takes place in a group setting, with the person's family and friends. Often families will hire an outside intervention specialist (who may also be affiliated with a rehabilitation clinic for alcoholics and other addicts) to sit in on the intervention and give assistance if necessary. Loved ones can get nervous and upset when confronting the alcoholic in their life so hiring an alcoholism intervention coach or counselor to help guide the process can help a great deal. Almost always, the intervention is a surprise to the alcoholic.

The first reaction a person has when seeing all their family and friends in a room waiting for them is usually surprise. Then if they spot an outside party, like an intervention coach, they may become wary of the situation. There are some alcoholics that do not want to stay. Others will stay, and listen to what their loved ones have to say to them. During an intervention, each person usually reads a letter they have written about how the alcoholic has hurt them by drinking and what they will do if the alcoholic does not agree to get help. This may mean break up with them, cut them out of their life, not help them with bills, and so on.

If you feel that you might be an alcoholic, there is an alcoholism test from Johns Hopkins that you can take at your doctor's office or online that asks questions about your drinking. While a simple alcoholic quiz can't diagnose this disease, it can alert you to warning signs. Before you are the guest of honor at an alcoholic intervention, help yourself by going to the doctor, a counselor, a rehab center or a meeting for alcoholics. The first step towards getting help is the most important one you'll make, from there you will learn to take each day as it comes and find coping strategies to help with alcohol cravings. Whether you decide to go inpatient or outpatient with your treatment it is important to know you can be helped.
