Side Effects of Alcohol Withdrawal
There are different levels of alcohol withdrawal a person can experience based on their drinking habits. The phenomenon known as a hangover is actually a form of withdrawal from this liquid drug. Hangovers are characterized by symptoms like nausea, headache, dizziness, tremors, palpitations, vomiting and more. One of the reasons for these symptoms is dehydration from alcohol consumption. The other is actually due to poision in the body from too much alcohol – hence the term intoxication.
Almost everyone who drinks too much will get a hangover. However the alcoholic who has been drinking day in and day out for years may not ever get hangovers. That does not mean this person would be exempt from withdrawal symptoms. As a matter of fact, if an alcoholic who drank daily for years quit all of a sudden the withdrawal could be deadly. This is why it is important to detox from alcohol in a medical facility if you are an alcoholic.
Symptoms of withdrawal can be mild to severe. For the mildest symptoms, outpatient treatment may be approved by your doctor. These may include irritability, craving alcohol, anxiety, nightmares, fuzzy thoughts and mood swings. Moderate symptoms include the physical symptoms of a hangover along with palpitations, sweating, tremors and more. The most severe symptoms are hallucinations (delirium tremens) and convulsions. These can be life threatening if not treated medically.
Even after the acute withdrawal symptoms, the alcoholic may still suffer from emotional and physical side effects. For these reasons it is a good idea to consider inpatient treatment for at least one month if your alcoholism has progressed to the point of withdrawal side effects. However your doctor should help you make the decision. He or she can also refer you to the proper facility and even help you register. It is important to maintain open communication with your doctor regarding your alcoholism.
Because alcohol withdrawal is not enough to keep some people from drinking, there are support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous that work to help addicts maintain their sobriety for extended periods of time. Also it is important to remove yourself from people who drink or who influence you to drink, and surround yourself with a supportive network of people who want you to stay sober. The battle against alcoholism can be won, as they say in AA – one day at a time.
