Getting a Loved One Into an Alcohol Rehab Center

If someone close to you like a family member or friend is an alcoholic in denial, you may be at your wits end when it comes to helping them. Perhaps you've tried to speak to them about their drinking, but they either got angry or ignored what you had to say. Or maybe you haven't said anything because you don't want to make them upset at you. Don't go unheard, make sure your loved one listens to you at a time when they are sober and you are prepared.

This is often where the intervention comes in. An intervention is usually presided over by a counselor specialized in substance abuse. Often, multiple friends and/or family members attend. The alcoholic is caught by surprise, preferably sober. They are asked to sit down while each member explains the damage their drinking has caused and the consequences they are prepared to impose if help is not accepted.

Usually this help is in the form of drug and alcohol rehab. Inpatient detox is the safest way to go, and when an alcoholic is in rehab you know they do not have access to their drug of choice. While parents can voluntarily commit their teens to rehab, it is harder for adults. If the person you are trying to help refuses to go, there is little you can do besides get a court order signed by a judge declaring them a danger to themselves or others that requires admittance into rehab.

Helping an alcoholic isn't always easy, but it is worth it. Even if they don't accept your help, you can feel good knowing you tried. Often, alcoholics are aware of their problem but are waiting for someone to come to them first. Many are glad to enter rehab and get alcoholism help, especially if they have hit the point called 'rock bottom.' Different for every addict, rock bottom is when jobs are lost, relationships are ruined, health is compromised and there doesn't seem to be anywhere lower to fall.

To find an alcohol rehab center, check your local Yellow Pages. You may want to schedule a private consultation with a member of the staff, especially if you are planning an intervention for your loved one. It is also important that the alcoholic has a primary doctor that is kept informed and helps take care of their medical needs. At the rehab facility, not only will alcoholics be detoxed, they will be taught to live in society without the crutch of drinking.
